set design & projection mapping

In the summer of 2018 we were hired by State Opera Plovdiv to make a project for scenography of the opera “Madam Butterfly”. It’s one of the most famous titles by Giacomo Puccini telling about the story of young Japanese geisha who fell in love with an American officer.

The performance was created exclusively for the stage of the Ancient Roman theater (originally constructed in 1st century AD). In order to design the space, we used elements of traditional Japanese architecture and modern minimalistic  aesthetics. Geisha’s world and her American dream were drawn by projection mapping. Here are some sketches from the process of developing the opera.

The decors were executed by the ateliers of Opera Plovdiv and the premiere on 23rd June gave a start of the festival Opera Open. Director of the production is Nina Naidenova, the costumes were designed by Tsvetanka Petkova – Stoynova. “Madam Butterfly” was conducted by Jacopo Sipari Di Pescasseroli (Italy) and in the role of Cho-Cho-San was the soprano Hue-Youn Lee (South Korea).
